A major project in the Kaluga region

We continue to share the results of work on a major project in the Kaluga region, the Lyudinovo reservoir.
The area is 8.7 sq.km
The purpose of algolization:
- improvement of water quality in the reservoir
- suppression of the number of blue-green algae
- increase in the level of dissolved oxygen in water
- increasing the level of phyto- and zooplankton development
- increase of the main healthy food supply
- improving the immunity of the fish herd
- restoration of recreational potential.
A little history of the project:
In 2019, there was a serious problem with maximum allowable concentration harmful substances in the lake, water blooming, smell. For each sq.m. ~ 1 meter of silt, at least, and this is millions of tons of silt deposits.
In 2021, Algotec began work on the rehabilitation of the Ludinovsky reservoir, having passed three stages of application.
In 2022, a one-time suspension was introduced - on September 15.
We want to share the conclusions and recommendations from the 2022 report:
according to biological samples, the tense ecological situation remains. Factors may include the discharge of poorly treated sewage from residential buildings located both near the coastline and at some distance from the water's edge. The absence of a storm sewer in the city is also an unfavorable factor that has a negative anthropomorphic effect on the reservoir and its biocenosis.
according to hydrochemical samples, the ecological situation is generally stable, but a fairly significant spread of deviations from the ecological optimum caused by the above risk factors indicates a tense ecological situation and active adaptation processes going on in the reservoir. The most favorable situation is observed in the upper reaches of the reservoir, the less stable ecological situation is observed at the dam.
The studies were carried out on two dates: before the introduction of the suspension into the reservoir and 25 days after the introduction of the algolizant. What is important from the figures, as in previous years of observations, there is a predominance of diatoms and blue-green algae in the reservoir. But, according to the results of this year, the number of diatoms after the introduction of chlorella decreased by 11.5 times! A significant decrease in blue-green algae was also observed (from 17.95% to 1.28%)!!!.
The recommended method of rehabilitation of such reservoirs: complex bioremediation with the stocking of the reservoir by herbivorous fish and systematic algolization with a highly productive strain of chlorella.
Work on such large projects with visible problems, under the influence of industrial and economic pressure, requires an ecosystem restoration program, the introduction of chlorella throughout the growing season and additional measures over the next few years.
