Fisheries in India is a very important economic activity and a thriving sector with diverse resources and potential. India is also an important fish producing country through aquaculture in the world. India is home to over 10 percent of the world's fish diversity. The country currently ranks second in the world in terms of total fish production, with an annual fish production of around 9.06 million metric tons.
As the second largest aquaculture producing country, the share of inland fisheries and aquaculture has risen from 46 percent in the 1980s to more than 85 percent in recent years in total fish production. Freshwater aquaculture has shown a staggering tenfold growth from 0.37 million tons in 1980 to 4.03 million tons in 2010; with an average annual growth rate of over 6 percent.
